That is, we define a wish list, but is this list private or public? Are we just listing the things we want to buy, or are we expecting that someone show their gratitude for anything, and buy us one of the items in the list?

As soon as we make one wish list private, then it is just for us to track what we want to buy. If we make it public, that means we want to show other what we would like to have. In that case, at least on a small amount, we are expecting to receive any of the items on the wish list for gratitude.

I know of some people that got home and had a package with items from their wish lists. But I do not think there are so many lucky guys.

For me, I was lucky enough for a group of friends to visit my wish list and buy some items to thank me for some work. That was great.

And yes, although I would love any item someone might offer me, my list is mostly to keep track of books (and media) that people suggest me, and that I would like to see in detail later and, probably, buy.

And no, although you might think I would post here my wish list URL, I think that would not be nice

I though you might be interested to know that I finished watching Castle, season 1. OK, probably you are not interested just on that simple information, but to know something more. Probably you would like to know what I think about it. To tell you that I am preparing to start watching season 2 would would be, probably, enough to make you understand I liked it.

Now, how can I describe Castle? Murders, detectives, Castle and comedy. I will not tell anything from the story, but the series is well constructed. Instead of telling us the full story of the characters in the first episode (that happens in the latest Knight Rider – 2008), in Castle they are built through episodes. You will learn more and more about the main characters, one step at a time. And that information will be somehow connected to the story, they will not just fall from the sky.

I recommend.

I do not play much. Just got my Xbox360 home, again, I am starting, again, to play GTA IV. And I will probably post here the missions that I complete. Do not expect me to spam the blog, as I do not play much. Really. And that is especially true because I am playing with an old CRT TV. That makes it quite difficult to read and see some details. I really want to buy a 22″ LCD monitor to use with the XBox and with my Mac, when working. It needs to have HDMI. That amounts to about 150 Euros, that I can not afford at the moment. So, I will need to keep playing on TV.

Back to the mission, Jamaican Heat is done. The task is to help Little Jacob to kill some guys. Not anything fancy. The interesting thing? Little Jacob smokes too much. When driving the car with Jacob inside, you will notice the smoke getting out from the window. Great detail, Rockstar!

In the recent times you should be hearing a lot on map-reduce. I first heard of the term in last year Codebits. Although I wasn’t there, there was a talk with that title. I confess that knowing that map and reduce are common functional operators on different programming languages, I did not look to the talk abstract. During this year Yet Another Perl Workshop Europe, in Pisa, I saw a book on Hadoop, asked what it was about to a friend that wanted to buy it, and he said: a framework to implement Map-Reduce.

That made me think.. wait.. this should be the name of something different from what I though it was. Looking deeper I understood the concept. Googling, I found Google filled the patent request in 2004, and patented it in 2010. Found also that I used that construct in 2007, and documented it on my PhD thesis in 2008. Of course I did not call it Map-Reduce. In fact I did not call it anything fancy. It was just a way to get to results. Named it as my “divide and conquer approach”. And I did not heard of Google approach as well. I just got to it because I needed some results.

So, this is yet another reason why I hate software patents.

I have been using My Tv Shows to track the episodes I watch for some TV series. For movies, I am relying on this blog. Today I decided to search for a similar web application for movies. I found what it seems to be promising: I Check Movies.

Unfortunately, what seemed promising resulted in a big delusion. First, the website lacks on usability. How do you check a movie you have just watched? I searched for a menu option, but there wasn’t any for that operation. Finally, I decided that probably that option would show up if I searched the website for a specific movie. Note that the search entry is somewhere near the profile options, where you are not expecting a main feature to be present.

But hey, I tested it, and the result was that the movie I just searched was not available. That is just great. And there is no option to add it. This would mean that I just watched a movie that does not exist at all. Yes, they do not admit that they might have forgot some great movie. I confess it wasn’t a great movie. My search was Bikini Girls on Ice, just because it was the last movie I watched. But it wasn’t found.

I decided not to give up right ahead (but that was my will), and tried to search for Big Fish. It is in the 250 top list from IMDB so it should really be there. And, great, it was. I checked in the movie. The website took about two minutes to process that request. Great for an asynchronous AJAX call, huh?

Then, I got back to my dashboard, and saw my profile a shown above. Can you notice anything interesting? Note that I have 0 checks, but I have one Last Checked item. Great!

Deleted the bookmark. Will continue to use this blog and IMDB to rate movies.

Bikini Girls on Ice is classified in IMDB as, in the main category, horror. I tend to disagree. Although the writer might want this to be a horror movie it is too soft.

First, there is no story. Some guy kills everybody he finds. Period.

So, how did I manage to watch the movie till the end? Look at the picture on the right and you will understand. Yes, the guy kills everybody he finds. But this movie director known that, if he added bikini girls, people would stay till the end of the movie. Not because they are interested in whatever will happen to them (they will die, of course), but because they are interested in looking to well looking girls in bikini.

And some handsome girls.

Movie is 4.2/10 in IMDB at the time of writing. I am sure it is not because of the movie. Rating 4, just because of them… the bikini girls.

I had this movie in my queue for some time. I remember a lot of fuzz because of this movie. And now that I’ve watched it, I can’t understand what all that fuzz what about. The story is the usual, for superheroes movies. Something, like a spider of an injection, it is the same thing, make the man a superhero. He has an alter-enemy. And they fight. Occasionally, there are girls. Oh, and regarding girls, this movie was stuffed with them, starting with Eva Mendes, Scarlett Johansson or the also cute Jaime King.

The only thing that makes this movie different is the way it is filmed. But ever that, although interesting, is not great. It makes the movie difficult to understand on some scenes.

Voted 5 on 10, at IMDB.
