October 2006 Archives
This is my 400th entry on this blog. Also, this means I do not have anything more interesting to say at the moment.
Today I found a new spam gem on the blog. Look how deep this comment is:
People hello! I search an answer for one important question — we live for what? And probably this site can help me with an answer. I want that all understood — we must eradicate aggression on earth and peacefully develop more.

Yesterday (or for those in the same timezone, this night) Mozilla released the last major version of their award-winning browser, Firefox. I am using it for about a month (well, beta and release candidates) and I must say I like it more than the previous version. Also, the fact of including a spell checker is helping me a lot on my bloging task,
For the first time I had some fun watching a F1 race. I was watching it specially because it was the last race of the year and could be an interesting race if Michael Schummacher won the race against Fernando Alonso, specially with this last one out of the race. Well, Schummacher had a little problem with a tire, thus racing a lot of time in the last places of the race. He ended at 4th place. Quite nice to see he climbing in the position grid. Also, it was fun because I was talking with a friend who didn't have TV to watch the race.
Now, that Schummacher finished his career in F1, maybe "Futebol Clube do Porto" can hire him to our football team.
The F1 logo is quite noisy because they say in the site that all information is copyrighted. Thus, I think they probably prefer a bad logo than a decent one.
LEGO sets that need batteries include free batteries from Duracell. That is not strange, but welcome!
Well, I wonder how much Duracell pays Lego to put so many publicity in their website and set boxes.

Probably you have seen this image before. It is being mailed by everyone as a joke. Meanwhile, and probably because I am a little fat (no, not comparable with the guy in the photo) I really think that people can like each other without looking to the physical aspects. Well, probably that's why I do not a girlfriend... they just look to the physical aspects. But if that is true, I really do not want one of those...
Berkeley DB is a powerful standalone database system based on Btrees (or hashes). It is quite efficient (although their developers do not know to maintain a stable API though releases). It was developed by SleepyCat (click on the Oracle logo to visit their page). Normally that page includes a nice cat sleeping. Today I found... the Oracle logo. It seems that Berkeley DB was bought by Oracle. At the moment Oracle maintains the database as open source. I hope they keep it that way. Please!
I hate to be in a monologue. This week I registered in a discussion list about a tool (pkg-config) and sent an email about a bug (well, I think it is a bug) and asking for comments. I think I am the only person registered, as nobody answered me. Also, for about a week no messages are sent to the list. Well, probably it is dead and I do not know...

This is another stuffed animal I offered about a month ago to another girl. Sorry, UPS, I just offer this kind of presents to girls.

Today I installed Arch Linux on my server. I was trying to compile X.org 7.1 on my old Slackware but I got a lot of compilation errors (most were dependencies not correctly detected by the makefiles). So, I decided to install a new Linux. Slackware 11 is out for about two weeks and I like to use slackware. Unfortunately, it is using apache 1.x with no mod_perl. Thus, a friend poked me to try Arch linux. I tried and... it has some problems (not much, in fact), but it is being fun to play with AIGLX...
I really like to offer stuffed animals. This was the last one going to the home of a nice girl. Lucky rabbit.

I could not resist. Ordered this Lego truck for Christmas. It is quite big and with a lot of bricks. It remembers me an old truck from Lego ModelTeam old days. This doesn't have so much details (it is a technic set) but seems quite interesting. Includes a lot of gears, and pneumatic bricks. Should be a good buy!
In the last few days I am getting a lot of accepted spam. I really do not know how do they pass the old captcha (I know it wasn't a good one). Now I have a different one. Hope this works a little better.
Yes, who said Friday the 13th was a bad luck day? Does hugging a nice girl twice, and lifting her count? Well, ok, she was hard to lift as she has almost my height and I do not have much strength. Well, I do not mind if more Friday 13th like this come along...
Yeah, I continue receiving junk, but most gets stopped by the software. Luckily it saves all the junk messages so I can review them. And why I say that is luck? Because I receive some interesting and sexy messages:
Hello. do you remember our last night? My sweet, you was so hot. Let us meet yet, understand, I want yet.April
Just to let you all know that my blog finally reached the 300 comments (without spam). Also, with this post I am a little more near the 400 posts. But if this continues like this, I will not reach 400 at all. I really do not know what to talk about... hmms...
The Portuguese Perl "Foundation" website changed in design. Content will be expanded soon. Bilingual content will be added as well.
I know you do not need to know. But I do not have nothing more interesting to post at the moment, so... here it goes. Just ordered two CDs from Taizé music, the Freddie Mercury CD (see older post), and a book from O'Reilly, Mastering Algorithms with C. Interesting to refer that O'Reilly offers 30% discount for Perl Mongers groups, but Amazon offers 34% for anybody.
Yesterday I come back from Lisbon. In the street I was at 120Km/h and after a curve I found the transit all stopped. Good the brakes ABS worked well, and I did manage to control the car. Now, the only thing I didn't try on my car are the airbags. But I really do not want to test them...
There is a protocol at least under Portuguese universities to share a common approach to the wifi network on their campus. Basically, a network named e-U is created, and it is authenticated in the university where the student or teacher or whatever works. Unfortunately the Science University (FCUL) doesn't let users from other universities to share their e-U network.
In the hotel, unfortunately, there is wireless just in the lobby. Fortunately Lisbon people are good people. I just discovered that someone in the neighborhood has a open wireless connection. That is very nice. Thanks, neighbor!
