December 2004 Archives

YAPC::EU::2005 will be held in Braga, Portugal, from August 31 to September 2.

  • Proposal Submission Deadline: Sunday, May 15th 2005
  • Speaker Notification: Monday, Sunday, June 19th 2005
  • Papers/Slides for Proceedings: Sunday, July 31th 2005

The theme for this year's conference is "Perl Everywhere"; we are therefore looking for talks on this topic. Show us where you use Perl and what for. We will also, of course, accept talks on topics that are not related to the theme.

I started a new module yesterday, to emulate some of the AutoMake macros in pure Perl. At the moment it is almost empty, with just one function that is working on Linux and OS-X (guess why!).

Although this module is still almost unusable, it is the first module for which I receive an e-mail with congratulations.

Interesting World!

Every year Mark Fowler prepares a Perl Advent Calendar. At each day of the advent, a Perl Module available in CPAN is dissected. It is a very interesting way to learn a little more.

Unfortunately, this year advent calendar is not complete. We hope somebody completes it very soon (it is missing four days).

There are very interesting license plates with interesting sayings around the world. Unfortunately, Portuguese license plates match with /[A-Z]{2}-[0-9]{2}-[0-9]{2}/ and /[0-9]{2}-[0-9]{2}-[A-Z]{2}/ and very soon, with /[0-9]{2}-[A-Z]{2}-[0-9]{2}/, which don't help to make funny sentences.

Luckily, we have tourists!

Today I received my first HTML Christmas Card. Unfortunately, I was stupid and didn't notice that the URL presented and the read link were different: the real link included information about my email address.

What I mean with this is: be careful with e-cards. They are just a way to stole emails for spam. Everytime you click one of these links you receive by email, you confirm to the spammer that that link really exist.

So, use your imagination for Christmas Cards. Use a simple email with ASCII art, use a set of attached images. Use a card printed. Use paper and pencils!

Ok, Soccer for those American folks.
Well, I'm not properly a Football freak, but I have a preferred team: Futebol Clube do Porto. And I really need to blog today about them, given that they conquered today the InterContinental Cup against the Once Caldas from Colombia. A very disputed game! Hurray!

People like to photograph. Some photograph landscapes, some other portraits, and some photograph nude woman. Other, toilets. Check it here!

Yeah. It seems that there are only three Perl Freaks in Portugal. At least, there are just three subscribers to The Perl Review here. Also, there are just three Perl Freaks in Spain, Ireland and Denmark.
Six in Italy! Eleven in Germany. Twenty Three in United Kingdom.

Now, why don't you subscribe too?

So, these meeting of LEGO freaks are nice, but very, very bad for your budget. I ended up buying some sets: Now I can't buy lego in the next months. Bad news!

Today I went to another PLUG meeting: about 12 grown-up (22+ years old) who like lego. We all love LEGO: all kind. Some of us like more Technic, other more city, other star-wars. But it is all the same: small plastic pieces you plug together.

Another interesting thing (although not nice) is that we are all boys. Just one girl around. Does girls prefer other kind of toys, or they don't think it is appropriate for grown-ups play with toys?

...when something runs well. Thanks, Ana!
